Description:
One of the initial inquiries directed at a black woman wearing a protective hairstyle is, “How do you wash it?” This question exemplifies the widespread lack of understanding regarding black culture and aesthetics. To bridge this gap, I employ technology to invite viewers to engage attentively in the experience and observe the intricate process involved in braiding. Simultaneously, this projection serves as a powerful representation for the black community.
Through a video projection, the intention is to reintroduce the profound significance and time-consuming nature of braiding and unbraiding afro hair. By avoiding abrupt cuts, viewers can fully immerse themselves in the process during a one-hour performance. This artistic endeavor aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the cultural practices and aesthetics rooted in black heritage while dismantling stereotypes and misconceptions.
